Blue Origin, the space tourism company founded by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, successfully launched an all-female celebrity crew, headlined by pop icon Katy Perry, to the edge of space for an almost 11-minute journey.
The six-person group, comprising Perry, Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, journalist Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and producer Kerianne Flynn, was lofted more than 100 km above the Earth’s surface aboard the New Shepard rocket developed by Blue Origin.
The space capsule rose vertically before the crew capsule detached mid-flight, later falling back to the ground, slowed by parachutes and a retro rocket. The jubilant women then emerged, with Perry kissing the ground after exiting the capsule.

“Oh my goddess!” Perry could be heard yelling when taking a peek at the moon from their sky-high vantage point. As the capsule returned to the Texas desert, the thrilled screams of the female crew were heard through the microphones. The women said it was time to bring “glam” into space, and they put the “a**” into “astronaut”.
Perry later revealed that she sang Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” during the historic flight rather than one of her own songs to celebrate humanity. “It’s not about singing my songs. It’s about a collective energy in there. It’s about us,” she said.

“I can’t put it into words. We got to see the moon!” Sanchez said. “The Earth looked so quiet … I don’t think you could describe it.”
Nguyen, Flynn and Bowe were all in tears after fulfilling their dreams, while Gayle King also kissed the earth upon returning, according to the New York Post. Big names like Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian were present at the launch site to support the crew. Bezos was present in the pre-launch to wish the women luck and give a kiss to Sanchez, telling her the thrilling experience will “change” her forever.
This mission also marks the first all-woman space crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s historic solo flight in 1963. It is also Blue Origin’s 11th sub-orbital crewed mission, which has offered space tourism experiences for several years.
Such high-profile guests are intended to keep public interest in Blue Origin’s work, as it battles multiple rival firms in the space tourism field, including Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
