As full-blown trade war is underway, US President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Chinese imports into America to a total of 245% “as a result of its retaliatory tariffs”, according to a White House Fact Sheet.
The latest escalation in tensions between China and the US came as Beijing told its airlines to stop receiving more Boeing planes in response to the earlier imposition of 145% tariffs on the Chinese imports by the US.
“More than 75 countries have already reached out to discuss new trade deals. As a result, the individualized higher tariffs are currently paused amid these discussions, except for China, which retaliated. China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States as a result of its retaliatory actions,” the White House Fact Sheet said.
In retaliation to the previous tariffs, China reportedly asked its airlines to stop buying aircraft parts and equipment from US companies.
The new tariffs came hours after Trump, in a statement through White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, said that the ball is now in China’s court.
“The ball is in China’s court. China needs to make a deal with us. We don’t have to make a deal with them,” Leavitt said.
China Reacts To 245% Tariffs
Reacting to the hike in tariffs yet again, the Chinese foreign ministry said that it does not seek confrontation, however, it declared that Beijing would not remain silent.
China reiterated calls for dialogue, though also making it clear that it was “not afraid” to fight a trade war.
“If the US really wants to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation, it should stop exerting extreme pressure, stop threatening and blackmailing, and talk to China on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said.
Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang warned the US that raising tariffs on Chinese goods would not restore American greatness.
Until now, the US and China have been trading blows with tariffs — the US placed a 145% tax on Chinese goods, and China responded with a 125% tax on American products.
Since the beginning of the year, Trump has raised tariffs sharply on Chinese imports. He also introduced a 10% general tariff on many US trade partners.
